How to Make a Harry Potter Wand for Under $1

Harry Potter season is upon us once again and it’s time to accessorize. If you’re like me, you might be looking to do it on the cheap. Want to learn how to make a Harry Potter wand for under $1? I thought so…

The best part of this project is that you probably already have most of the items around your house!

Wooden dowel
Hot glue/Glue gun

I purchased my dowel from Home Depot for about $1. I brought it home and cut into three smaller sections – the wands. I am going to suggest keeping the wands somewhere between 8 – 12 inches.

I actually cut my dowels all different lengths to add variety. Once they were cut, I hit them very briefly with my little hand sander to get rid of any slivers and to round off the ends.

Spinning the wooden dowel around, add hot glue around the length to add dimension.

I had this can of Valspar spray paint on hand from another project. I took the wands outside and spritzed them with a quick coat for the wand’s base color.

Once the spray paint dried, I just took a couple of different metallic craft paint colors and highlighted the three dimensional aspects. I also added glitter to two of the wands.

I think they turned out pretty great, but even better? The kids thought they were totally magical. And, for the record, crafting at night, in the dark, does not make for beautiful photos!

We had to take the wands out for a spin. So we visited “Hogwarts” via Platform 9 3/4.

We donned our very simple, very inexpensive to create wizard robes.

Endured the sorting hat…

Cashed in on our 15 min. of fame…

Which may, or may not, have turned into 30 min…

Learned about a little magic and even played with some magical creatures.

The boys are actually a bit to young for the current Harry Potter films, but they enjoyed the pre-show party. We’ve found that though the movies are a bit to advanced, the books are just right.

Have you read the Harry Potter books/watched the shows with your kids?
