How Early is Too Early?

If you follow me on Facebook, you might know that I’ve been working on a project that involves this semi-horrible, thrifted, two foot wedding candelabra:

You might also know that this project is part of a series of things I’ve been working on for Halloween…Yes, you heard me right, Halloween. I’ve actually been collecting things (like my candelabra) since late July.

I felt really good about it all until someone questioned my dedication to a holiday that’s still two months away.  I’ve been stewing over the issue all week.

Then I thought, if I can leave my Fourth of July wreath up through the end of August, surely I can plan for Halloween in August too…

I am also justifying my madness with the knowledge that Utahns spend more money on Halloween than any other state in the nation. Additionally, I saw Christmas decor in Hobby Lobby over a month ago. What can I say, I am a product of my surroundings?!?

Then, I had this conversation on Twitter with my friends Amy and Jen:

Our conversation progressed and basically I came to the conclusion that if Amy and Jen can put up Halloween, then it’s totally okay for me to be thinking about it, right? RIGHT?

I am not going to name names here, but about 15 min. after this conversation, I saw two other girls talking Christmas.

I am comfortable with my decision to create, not display Halloween decor for now, but I am wondering how early is too early to start planning for holidays? Do you decorate for Halloween? When do you start thinking about Christmas?

  1. The planner in me starts thinking about the holiday months before it’s here. Of course I wouldn’t decorate until about a month before though.

  2. haha!! Too funny! Just so you know…it is still sitting in a pile in a corner of the family room ;) Normally I only decorate a month or so before. But with blogging I tend to get holiday projects done earlier so that I can post them in plenty of time for my readers to be able to make them and then used them for the holiday as well. So that tends to put me a month or so ahead of schedule. So…my family has learned to just deal with it :) No sense in getting things out twice right?

Amy, I will have you know I was feeling so bolstered by your “go ahead” that I pulled out my Halloween boxes last night. I am restricting myself to fall-sh stuff (like pumpkins and autumn leaves for now), but the spooky stuff is bound to make an appearance soon! LOL

      Love you friend!

I am so glad to see these conversations! Last week I got some new autumn/Halloween decor and was tempted to put it right up. Tomorrow is Sept 1st. Is that too soon? haha!
(I have a good friend who spends the entire month of September decorating for Halloween. She has a storage unit dedicated to just Halloween and Christmas decor. She’s over the top for sure, but she goes all out and her house looks awesome!)

Cindy, It sounds like your friend is living my dream – a whole room for holiday decor?! Awesome. If you put up your Halloween decor, I’d love to see some of the photos…

  4. It is never too early in my book to start putting up fall decorations. I look at the kids being back to school/Labor Day as the go-ahead signal.

    My best- Diane

Diane, I am so glad you agree! I have pulled out all of my fall pumpkins and everything else. I think I will pull out the ‘spooky” in another couple of weeks….Thanks for stopping by!

  6. I started a few projects for fall and I’m thinking about pulling out just a few decor things this weekend. I’ll wait for several more weeks for the Halloween stuff.
(and I just learned something new: people from Utah are Utahns – thanks! :D )

LOL. I am glad that I could teach SOMETHING even if it is just that people from Utah are called Utahns :) I have to admit, I think we get a bit more crazy here over holiday decorating than some people…the stores are chock-full of fun Halloween items now!

      xoxo
